Can I use third-party password managers to store passkeys?
Yes, but there are some important limitations — especially regarding your iOS version and the password manager you’re using.
Which password managers support passkeys on iOS
| Password Manager | Supported from iOS version |
|---|---|
| iCloud Keychain | iOS 16+ |
| 1Password | iOS 17+ |
| Bitwarden (learn more) | iOS 17+ |
Important: The passkey must be stored in the same manager!
A passkey saved in Google Password Manager will only work with that manager — the same applies to Bitwarden, 1Password, and others.
Authentication is always tied to the manager where the passkey was originally stored.
How to set a third-party password manager as the default for passkeys
iOS 17 and later:
- Open Settings
- Go to Passwords
- Tap Password Options
- Select your preferred password manager from the list
