Using third-party password managers for passkeys on Android

Can I use third-party password managers to store passkeys?
Yes, but there are some important limitations — especially regarding your operating system version and the password manager you’re using.

Which password managers support passkeys on Android

Password Manager Supported from Android version
Google Password Manager Android 9+
Bitwarden (learn more) Android 14+

Important note: Older Android versions

If you’re using Android 13 or earlier, you cannot use third-party password managers for passkeys.
Only Google Password Manager is supported on those versions.
To use a third-party manager, you need Android 14 or higher, and you must set your preferred manager as the default in your system settings.

Important: The passkey must be stored in the same manager!

A passkey saved in Google Password Manager will only work with it — the same applies to Bitwarden, etc.
Authentication is always tied to the manager in which the passkey was originally stored.

How to set a third-party password manager as the default for passkeys

On Android:

  1. Open your device settings

  2. Search for “Autofill service” or “Password manager”

  3. Select your preferred password manager

Examples:

  • Samsung: Settings → General management → Passwords and autofill → Autofill service

  • Google Pixel: Settings → Passwords & accounts → Autofill service
